February 2004 - Big Front Brakes

Head Part 1 | Head Part 2 | Front Sub-frame
Jack Fahuna at PROBMW provided me with the necessary parts for the big brakes. This uses TII struts, BMW CS series ATE calipers and 1977 E21 3 series hubs (modified for 19mm studs) and Brembo 1977 E21 rotors. This his how it looks installed. Remember the bleeder valves go UP if they are not marked left/right when you get them.
Back view. This shows the spacer in the calipers themselves. The pads won't go in yet until we are ready to stop the car. For now I just need it to roll around the shop.
For fun, I placed one of the 15" ATS wheels on the car to see how it is going to fit.
It's going to be real close in the front but the back is going to be just right. I may have to use a spacer to clear the calipers due to the offset of this wheel.
This view shows how the back looks with the wheel on. No rubbing on the strut so I'm good there.
Close up view shows that I have purposely not installed the sway bar links to the bar. At this angle the sway bar won't clear the front lip spoiler so when the wheels are on the ground we'll hook it up correctly.
A view of the drivers side showing the same view without a wheel. It's now ready for the brake lines to be formed and installed.

MORE NEXT MONTH!
